How to get to Hangzhou

The quickest way to travel to Hangzhou from Shanghai is China’s high-speed rail (G/D trains): about 50–70 minutes, trains run roughly every 10 minutes, and fares typically range from ¥60–¥200. Alternatively, a Didi ride (China’s Uber equivalent) costs around ¥400–¥600 and takes about 2–2.5 hours. We will also arrange a bus from a pickup point in Shanghai to Hangzhou on the morning of Thursday, October 22, details TBD.

Apps for China

Payments in China

In China, most everyday payments are made digitally using mobile apps such as Alipay and WeChat Pay rather than cash or bank cards. These apps are used almost everywhere, and payments are typically made by scanning a QR code with your phone. For larger purchases at hotels, malls, and airports, international bank cards are usually still accepted. However, it’s very important to set up WeChat Pay or Alipay and link an international card before your trip so you can pay easily during your stay.

1. Download Alipay from your App Store or Google Play.2. Choose the international version (interface in English).3. Register with your international mobile number: Click 'Register', select your country/region, then enter your mobile number. You will receive an SMS containing a verification code.4. Create a password: This password will allow you to log in and authorise certain payments.5. Real-name authentication: the crucial step, you will need to:- Take a photo of the personal information page of your passport.- Follow the instructions for facial recognition.- The system will automatically recognise and populate your name, passport number, and other information.6. Add your Visa, Mastercard, or UnionPay card: You must enter your card number and provide the other requested information.7. You can start scanning QR codes to make payments or use the other services offered. Note: Please note that purchases over ¥200 may incur a 3% international card fee. On smaller purchases you can always ask to make payments in separate payments and on larger purchases card or cash should be accepted.

Check if you need a Visa

Citizens of many countries can enter China visa-free for short stays (usually up to 30 days). These include:Albania, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bahrain, Barbados, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Dominica, Ecuador, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Grenada, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Oman, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, South Korea, Spain, Suriname, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Tonga, Turkey, Tuvalu, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Uruguay, Uzbekistan. If you are not a passport holder of one of these countries please make sure to apply 1-2 months before travel. Processing times can vary depending on the embassy and season, so avoid leaving it until the last minute.

Many apps and websites are blocked here in China, it is quite important to get VPN set up before entering the country. VPN: We suggest LeafVPN (free/cheap on the App Store), or V1VPN (the best recommended VPN for China). Other VPNs like Nord have been reported not to work there. E-SIM: If you get an e-sim then the 4G/5G data will most likely come with abilities to access your apps and websites. However, when you are on local wifi, these will still be blocked for you. So it is still advisable to download some VPN apps. I personally use leaf and buy 1 month of the premium version which is only $0.99. Physical Sim: You can also get your sim card at a counter in the airport and the helpdesk will be able to set up VPN for you. If they don't then you can also download VPN apps.

Booking flights to China

If you are booking China eastern flights, I recommend booking through Trip.com. China Eastern's official website is horrible.

The dress code is Formal. Our venue has a strong Chinese aesthetic, and we would love for guests to lean into that if they wish. Qipao, silk dresses, Mandarin-collar suits, Tang jackets, or other elegant Asian-inspired attire are encouraged but not required. Men are also very welcome to simply wear a classic suit and tie.If you’d like to follow the setting, soft and elegant colours would complement the space beautifully, but please feel free to wear what you feel best in.As the ceremony will be held on the lawn, we recommend avoiding stilettos and choosing grass-friendly shoes.

Hangzhou

The jewel of Hangzhou and the reason poets have been obsessing over this city for centuries, You can walk the causeways, rent a paddleboat, eat at lakeside restaurants, or just sit on a bench and watch the world go by.

West Lake

This is an immersive theatre show in the heart of Xixi wetland. I stumbled upon this two years ago and it was such a wonderful cultural experience. The show unfolds across multiple outdoor stages, the audience follows a guided route through wetlands and pavilions as scenes and actors appear along the path. Highly recommend!

"Xixi total tonight" performance《今夕共西溪》

A huge tranquil wetland just outside the city centre with winding waterways, reed beds, and little villages scattered throughout. You can take a boat through the canals or walk the boardwalk paths. Here, you can feel the rich folk culture atmosphere and appreciate the traditional Jiangnan village.

Xixi National Wetland Park (西溪湿地）

One of China's oldest Buddhist temples, tucked into a lush forest at the foot of Lingyin Mountain. The grounds are peaceful and the surrounding trails are full of ancient stone carvings. Even if temples aren't usually your thing, the setting alone is worth the visit. Get there early to beat the crowds.

LingYin Temple & Feilai Peak

Hangzhou's main shopping strip, right on the eastern shore of West Lake. You'll find international luxury brands, local boutiques, department stores, and plenty of cafes and restaurants. It's a nice area to wander even if you're not buying anything, since the lake is literally right there as your backdrop.

HUBIN SHOPPING DISTRICT (湖滨商圈)

NanShan Road is scenic, and culturally rich street along the southern bank of Hangzhou's West Lake. It is famous for its romantic ambiance, lined with parasol trees that turn golden in autumn, and is a hub for art galleries, cafes, and historic sites.

Hefang Street is a bustling pedestrian street and the city’s only well-preserved ancient thoroughfare, offering a glimpse into the culture and commerce of the South Song Dynasty. It is famous for its traditional Ming-Qing architecture, century-old shops, local snacks, and vibrant evening atmosphere, often featuring traditional lanterns and cultural performances.

EKA Tianwu is located in Pudong 535 Jinqiao Road, it's a trendy urban renewal project that is transformed from the Shanghai Marine instrument general factory into a creative park with unique architecture, art installations, cafes, restaurants and retail spaces.

West Bund is a premier waterfront cultural corridor located in the Xuhui District, featuring a "Museum Mile" with galleries like the West Bund Museum and Center Pompidou. This revitalized artsy area has extensive, scenic public parks, recreational areas, and modern architecture. Its a gorgeous, less crowded and modern version of the bund.

Xintiandi

Zhangyuan has been renovated into Shanghai's No 1 Public Space that blends fashion and culture, as well as a shopping destination for top brands. Adjacent, North Maoming also is a great place to shop and walk around.

Zhangyuan and North Maoming Road

A classical Chinese garden right in the middle of Shanghai's Old Town, dating back to the Ming Dynasty. It's compact but beautifully designed, with koi ponds, rockeries, pavilions, and winding corridors. The surrounding bazaar area is packed with food stalls and souvenir shops, so grab some xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) while you're there.

YU GARDEN & OLD TOWN (豫园)

If you're up for a full day of fun, Shanghai Disneyland is well worth it. The TRON roller coaster and Pirates of the Caribbean ride are standouts, and the Zootopia area is unique to this park. It's easy to reach by metro and the nighttime fireworks over the castle are genuinely spectacular.

This is honestly one of my favourite places to shop in Shanghai. Its located right next to Disneyland, with a row of nice restaurants near the lake. There are a ton of international and unique popular Chinese brands. They do tax refunds and I was able to get 10% back!

Bicester Village

I love this place, its got so much going on. Theres a pedestrian street full of milk tea, street food, snacks, a Starbucks Reserve, really nice bakeries, and restaurants. Its really close to Zhangyuan.

WuJiang Pedestrian Road 

A shopping centre in Pudong. It's pretty nice.

Taikoo Li Qiantan

Day Trips

Located 1.5 hours from Shanghai or Hangzhou, its a renowned 1,300-year-old water town often called the "Venice of the East". This place is absolutely gorgeous and so insanely fun. There are a lot of cultural elements, shops and restaurants to explore within the network of the water town.
